Roman Signer completed an apprenticeship as a structural draughtsman and attended the School of Arts and Crafts in Zurich from 1966 and Lucerne from 1969 to 1971. From 1971 to 1972, he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. It was here that he met his future wife Aleksandra Rogowiec. He has worked as a freelance artist in St. Gallen since 1972. From 1974 to 1995, he worked as a teacher and lecturer at the Lucerne School of Design. Since 1973, he has had numerous exhibitions in galleries and museums in Switzerland and abroad, and since 1981 he has been performing for the public. Since his participation in Documenta 8 in Kassel (1987 - paper wall, closing action of Documenta), the exhibition Skulptur-Projekte in Münster (1997) and the Venice Biennale (1999), Roman Signer has been one of the most important contemporary European artists.
